Defining Audiences

To find out which particular target audience would  best suited for my music video I researched into the various potential groups for my music video. It is essential that I try and specify who my target audience is so that then I am able to directing my product at them using conventions and themes popular for that group.

There are many ways to define an target audience and by using multiple different classification methods this help to give a clear indication of who your target audience will be.

Ways to classify a Target audience

Class and Status

  • Upper middle class
  • Middle class - middle class
  • Lower middle class
  • Skilled working class

Gender

  • Male
  • Female

Age

  • Teens
  • Young Adults
  • Adults

Life Matrix

A life matrix is also another way of determining your target audience, it is a new method that looks at ten audience categories, centred around both values, attitudes and beliefs, and more fundamental, demographic audience categories.

Tribe wired
Digital, free-spirited, creative young singles
Fun
Aspirational, fun-seeking, active young people
Dynamic Duos
Hard-driving, high-involvement couples
Priority Parents
Family values, activities, media strongly dominate
Home Soldiers
Home-centric, family-oriented, materially ambitious
Renaissance Women
Active, caring, affluent, influential mums
Rugged Traditionalists
Traditional male values, love of outdoors
Struggling Singles
High aspirations, low economic status
Settled elders
Devout, older, sedentary lifestyles
Free Birds
Vital, active, altruistic

I decided that Teens and young adults were the group to target my music video at, this is because people of this age range tend to listen to music more and watch music videos much more frequently compared to other age groups. I did not make my target audience to specific as this would limit the amount of people that would be willing to watch my music video.

From this questionnaire I have gained better understanding of my Target audience and what there likes and dislikes are. I now know what the most popular music genre chosen by my target group is indie so for my music video I will choose an indie music track. This questionnaire will help me address what my target group would like to see in my music video. I will use the most popular answers and try to avoid using the least popular, for example the favourite type of shot was straight cuts so I will highly likely use this as my main transition in my music video whilst avoiding wipes.
