Dircetor Reseach 2

Romain Gavras

Romain Gavras is a Greek music video director, who is most well known for directing Bad girls by M.I.A which was won two MTV Video Music Awards in 2012 for Best Cinematography and Best Directing. he is known for having a very rough, dark and gritty feel to his music videos which can be seen in M.I.A's born free.

The reason I choose to research into Romain Gavras was because I believe that the music videos he directed were of very high quality, this was due to him be able to make a video which gave of the same feel as the music. whilst the video make not directly relate to the lyrics it is what you would imagine when listening to the songs and that is what I hope to accomplish when making my music video.

His use of camerawork is one of the other main reason why I choose to research him as I think that his use of camerawork is of very good as he achieves a range of shot high quality shots in nearly all of his videos .  I also like the fact he does not focus on the performance of the artist as I feel this is over done in the music industry, is very generic to do for a music video and shows a lack of creativity.

Dircetor Reseach

Cameron Duddy

Cameron Duddy is a well-recognized music video and commercial director. He is well respected and rated by artist as once they have worked with him they usually come back, an example of this is Bruno mars his first video he directed for him was “the Lazy song” and he has now gone on to direct all four of the videos on his new album and was even hired for creative director on his tour.

He is most well known for directing "the Lazy song" by "Bruno Mars" this is an iconic music video that is very memorable and recognizable. the video on you tube currently has over 500million views and whilst many people might say that is due to it being such a popular song, the song has an alternative video which only has just over 12 million views.

The reason I chose Cameron Duddy was because of "The Lazy song" it is such a popular music video but is very simplistic and the  video was incredibly low budget to produce, the whole video is just one long take and the camera does not move staying in the same position. despite this there is still a range of shot as the artist and dancers move in and out changing from closer up to long shot.I feel as this video is very inspirational as it something I would be able to base my video off as it does not require a expensive budget any exotic locations or even any post production work.

 What have you Learnt?

From doing this shot count analysis I have learnt much from music videos which I have seen before but never really picked up on. Firstly I looked at the edit to next shot, straight cut were highly common and very few other types of transitions are used. Also the average length of each shot is no more than a few seconds and anything longer is very rare, these aspects give the music video a very high tempo and can often reflect the type of music. Also I noticed that there are normally two separate scenarios in music videos the first will be some sort of storyline and the other will be the artist performing, the two parts to the video are completely separate and they both serve different purposes to entertain and to portray the artist image. Lastly I noticed that the video does not necessarily have to match the music or the lyrics as many videos are very different to what you would imagine.

Theorists

Theodor Adorno
  • Theodor Adorno was a German theorist that believed that the music industry was controlled by the media and that the majority of the music we consume is forced upon us by the capitalists.
  • He thought that capitalists were behind the audiences listening and viewing trends and thought their main reasons for this was for money and power.
  • He believed that the trends were formed by creating false consumer needs, and in a way brainwashing them by feeding them what they want to hear and see.

Dick Hebdidge
  • Hebdidge was also a theorist but had conflicting and contrasting theories to Adorno
  • he believed that we were in control of our own media consumption and that Adorno's  theories were negative in the industry and also very far fetched.
  • he be backed up his theory of the freedom of consumption by drawing attention to the creation and development of constant music creation and new genres and sub-genres.
Keith Negus

  • Negus believed there were two ideologies for artists in the music industry.
  • These were that artist are either organic or synthetic.
  • Artist that are known as organic are naturally talented artist that writes there own lyrics and creates there own style and Image. A good example of an organic artist would be Arctic Monkeys.
  • whereas synthetic is were an artist is manufactured by and the record label and is purely there for the because they have star image qualities. A good example of a synthetic artist would be One Direction.
