- Theodor Adorno was a German theorist that believed that the music industry was controlled by the media and that the majority of the music we consume is forced upon us by the capitalists.
- He thought that capitalists were behind the audiences listening and viewing trends and thought their main reasons for this was for money and power.
- He believed that the trends were formed by creating false consumer needs, and in a way brainwashing them by feeding them what they want to hear and see.
Dick Hebdidge
- Hebdidge was also a theorist but had conflicting and contrasting theories to Adorno
- he believed that we were in control of our own media consumption and that Adorno's theories were negative in the industry and also very far fetched.
- he be backed up his theory of the freedom of consumption by drawing attention to the creation and development of constant music creation and new genres and sub-genres.
- Negus believed there were two ideologies for artists in the music industry.
- These were that artist are either organic or synthetic.
- Artist that are known as organic are naturally talented artist that writes there own lyrics and creates there own style and Image. A good example of an organic artist would be Arctic Monkeys.
- whereas synthetic is were an artist is manufactured by and the record label and is purely there for the because they have star image qualities. A good example of a synthetic artist would be One Direction.
